Hankinnan lyhyt kuvaus | Background (object and purpose of the procurement) Energy dispersive X-ray (EDS) analyzer for Field-emission scanning electron micro-scope: In integration with SEMs and FESEMs, this equipment is a valuable analytical de-vice in materials research, providing qualitative and quantitative elemental information from the sample surface. Basically, an energy-dispersive detector is used to separate the char-acteristic X-rays of different elements into an energy spectrum, and EDS system software is used to analyze the energy spectrum in order to determine the abundance of specific el-ements. Thus, EDS can be used to determine the chemical composition of materials down to a spot size of a few microns, and also to provide elemental composition maps over a targeted area. Together, these capabilities provide fundamental compositional information for a wide variety of organic, mineral and metallic materials, especially with an EDS System enabling the automatic quantification of elements in spectral, Point&Shoot, linescan, and mapping modes. Description of current state (e.g. existing equipment and compatibility with them) The purchase of an EDS system is a timely decision since it will be integrated with the Field-emission scanning electron microscope to be acquired soon by DGC (related pro-curement process already launched, with an expected acquisition by the end of Septem-ber. Description of the target state (Which needs should be fulfilled?) At DGC, and other LUT research units, researchers have extensive requirements for mate-rials characterization, with a frequent need for elemental analysis or a quick identification of unknown components prior to quantitative analysis. Hence, purchasing an EDS system, and integrating it with the to-be-acquired FE-SEM, will have a high added-value to the overall characterization expertise in DGC, and LUT in general. |
