Hankinnan lyhyt kuvausACTRIS is a pan-European distributed research infrastructure making long-term measurements of aerosol, clouds and trace gases at atmospheric observatories. The cloud radar will form part of FMIs contribution to this observation network, specifically the cloud profiling network, and will be deployed permanently in Kenttärova (Pallas). To belong to this observation network, the instrument must meet the specifications of the European-wide ACTRIS network. The cloud radar must also fulfil the scientific goals of FMI, which is to obtain the vertical profile of liquid water content and ice water content in clouds. Cloud radars operate at very specific frequencies due to the atmospheric windows (centred on 35, 94, 140, 215 GHz) and frequency allocation (government regulation). The only method for obtaining the vertical profile of liquid water content is to use the dual-frequency approach, i.e. transmit at two different frequencies and use the difference in the vertical profile of attenuation experienced by the two frequencies. This means that the two frequencies must be in different atmospheric windows (e.g. one at 35 GHz and one at 94 GHz). The cloud radar will be paired with the 35 GHz cloud radar that FMI already owns and operated. Since there are no cloud radars available commercially at frequencies above 100 GHz, the cloud radar must operate at 94 GHz. A passive channel for measuring LWP is required in order to be able to account for the attenuation of the radar beam by liquid clouds when making quantitative measurements in ice clouds above them, and for constraining the dual-frequency measurements. A blower system is also required to keep the antenna radome dry; a wet radome will attenuate the radar beam by an unknown amount, making quantitative measurements very difficult. No other commercial instrument includes a passive channel at 89 GHz and a blower system to keep the radome dry. Additionally, the cloud radar must have dual polarisation capability, i.e. transmit in at least one polarisation and receive in two orthogonal polarisations, in order to provide either LDR (linear depolarisation ratio) and the co-cross channel correlation coefficient, or slanted LDR and the co-cross-channel correlation coefficient in the slanted plane, together with the polarimetric spectra. This capability is necessary for insect mitigation at the deployment site as Lapland experiences high concentrations of insects in the summer months with reflectivity values similar to the clouds we wish to observe. Discriminating between insects and clouds is only possible using their different polarimetric signatures (LDR and the co-cross correlation coefficient, or their slanted equivalent, and the polarimetric spectra). Requirements for the cloud radar are: • Radar transmitting frequency at 94 GHz (within 1 GHz) and suitable for cloud measurements. • The system may be pulsed or FMCW • Resolution and sensitivity o Temporal resolution of 10 seconds or better o Range resolution of 30 m or better and ability to modify range resolution o Expected sensitivity at 1 km range better than -50 dBZ (better than -30 dBZ at 10 km range) while operating at the expected temporal and spatial resolution (30 m and 10 s) o Ability to optimize sensitivity by modifying temporal and range resolution • Output the full Doppler spectrum with options to produce using FFT lengths of 256, 512 (or more) points (i.e. velocity resolution of < 3 cm s-1) • Provide at least the first four moments of the Doppler spectrum (radar Reflectivity factor, Doppler velocity, Doppler spectral width, Doppler velocity skewness). • Have depolarization capability (i.e LDR or Slant LDR-STSR mode) with cross-channel sensitivity better than -25 dBZ, and provide the polarimetric Doppler spectra • Near field operation (i.e. useable signal starting from 250 m in range or closer) • Blower system to prevent antenna/radome wetting during precipitation • Passive microwave channel capable of measuring liquid water path (LWP) • Demonstrated capability to operate in sub-Arctic environment • Autonomous operation
