                "The Helsinki In Vivo Animal Imaging Platform of HiLIFE operates whole-body small",
                "animal imaging services on Meilahti (optical and micro-CT imaging) and Viikki",
                "(SPECT\/CT imaging) campuses, and imaging radiotracer synthesis services on",
                "Kumpula campus. With this purchase, the capacity to do positron emission tomograpy",
                "(PET) with CT co-registration is added to the service portfolio.",
                "",
                "The nature of some radiotracers for PET imaging requires immediate injection after",
                "synthesis. On the other hand, sequential multimodal imaging of individual animals with",
                "different combinations of PET, SPECT, CT and optical imaging is increasingly required",
                "especially for following longitudinal disease processes. Repeated transfer of the",
                "animals between campuses is impractical, stressful for the animals and in some cases",
                "prohibited by the microbiological status of the imaging units. Therefore, the increased",
                "imaging needs at the platform can only be met by a PET\/CT system that can be moved",
                "between the three campuses according to the needs of ongoing research projects and",
                "accommodated in the small spaces available. Additionally, the system needs to meet",
                "minimum specifications for resolution, sensitivity and available imaging settings to be",
                "suitable for applications such as receptor\/ligand imaging in the central nervous system",
                "and tumor metastasis detection.",
                "",
                "The following conditions need to be met for the PET\/CT system to meet the University",
                "of Helsinki requirements:",
                "\u2022 Modular (separated PET and CT systems) and lightweight enough to be easily",
                "transported by researchers between the campuses (Meilahti\/Kumpula\/Viikki) in a",
                "standard vehicle without the need of specialized driver\u2019s license (van or passenger",
                "car).",
                "\u2022 Maximum length, width and depth of the individual units of 80 cm to allow benchtop",
                "placement in small rooms.",
                "\u2022 The PET and CT systems need to be shielded adequately so that they can be used in",
                "rooms without any additional construction for radiation protection, and the installation",
                "should be with a plug-and-play fashion on standard electrical supply and network",
                "connection.",
                "\u2022 The system needs to fit both mice and rats (up to 450 g) for whole-body imaging.",
                "\u2022 The system needs come with a monitoring system for respiratory rate and body",
                "temperature with control of the body temperature to ensure animal wellbeing during",
                "long scans.",
                "\u2022 The system needs to enable the following acquisition setups:",
                "   o Whole body",
                "   o With cardiac and respiratory gating",
                "   o Static",
                "   o Dynamic",
                "\u2022 A dedicated multi-mouse animal imaging stage (\u201chotel\u201d) is required to accelerate",
                "longitudinal imaging of large cohorts of mice.",
                "\u2022 The instrument must accommodate tracer injection on the scanner bed for dynamic",
                "studies and well as exteriorization of catheters and other tubing from the animal bed",
                "even during the CT acquisition.",
                "\u2022 The technical specifications required for the studies in Helsinki are as follows:",
                "   o Axial field-of-view (FOV) in both PET and CT >10 cm, and transaxial FOV in both",
                "PET and CT >5 cm",
                "   o The spatial resolution according to NEMA NU4 standard for filtered back projection",
                "(FBP) needs to be below 1.3 mm for PET and <100 \u03bcm for CT to allow for mouse CNS",
                "studies imaging studies",
                "   o The NEMA peak sensitivity in PET needs to exceed 10%.",
                "   o The CT X-ray source needs to be self-shielded, and allow a sub-minute timescale",
                "acquisition at extremely low doses (<5 mGy for mouse full-body CT) in order to impart",
                "the least effect in longitudinal tumor studies.",
                "\u2022 The system needs to be compatible with the addition of SPECT functionality as a",
                "separate unit.",

                "These conditions can only be met by a combination of the B-Cube (PET) and X-Cube",
                "(CT) systems from Molecubes BV, as it is the only modular light-weight high-resolution",
                "and high-sensitivity PET\/CT system available that will accommodate mice & rats and",
                "allow gated imaging protocols. A Y-cube for SPECT imaging is also available for future",
                "upgrade of the system."
